Elderberry Syrup Your Kids Will Love

Elderberry is all the rage these days and rightfully so!   We are all super focused on keeping our immune systems strong. I always have it on hand during the cold winter months to help keep my family above the wellness line. And it soooo easy to make, and as you know – easy is the name of the game!

Making homemade elderberry soup costs a fraction of the price of the gummies and syrups sold in stores. I also love to store the berries in my freezer so I can whip up a batch if someone is not feeling too well.

The Benefits of Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry is a simple amazing powerhouse. It can boost your immune system, protect against cold the flu viruses, it’s an antioxidant, it helps support the liver, and it steadys blood sugar levels. All amazing benefits to this little tiny berry.  Also, the raw honey is beneficial as well offering you immune-boosting power.  I love to make simple things that help support my family’s needs.

One study published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine found that participants who consumed elderberry syrup felt relief from their flu symptoms four days earlier on average than those who received a placebo.

Simple Ingredients Your Kids Will Love

The ingredients for elderberry syrup is so simple, elderberry,  raw honey, and cinnamon.

I always buy my dried elderberries from the Frontier Co-op on Amazon.

Fresh elderberries are hard to come by and I rarely see them available to buy online. I love the dried variety because I can store them in an airtight container or the freezer and always have them on hand for when someone is not feeling well.

We always have raw honey in our house too. You can score some at your local farmers’ market or on Amazon.

Cinnamon is another staple I always have on hand. Other recipes commonly call for ginger and clove but my kids don’t care for it. So I leave it out. Feel free to add a 1/4 tsp of each if you like.

How to Store Your Elderberry Syrup

I store the Elderberry in freezer-safe ball jars,  and I love the plastic covers for them. Just go ahead and order a case because you will use them for a bunch of things around the kitchen!

This amazing elderberry syrup lasts in the fridge for two weeks or keeps in the freezer for months in Freezer safe, mason jars. It’s great to freeze so you always have it i one hand when someone needs wellness support.

How Much  Elderberry Syrup Should I Take?

1/2 – tsp for children once every other day  for immune support during the winter months.

1/2 – table spoon for adults

If the flu or cold hits – increase the dose to 3 times a day

Some people take the weekends off from taking this magic elixir, some people take it for two weeks at a time and then skip a week to do what is best for their body. Either way, this is an easy elderberry syrup recipe your kids will love and will keep your whole family healthy and strong!
